London's Au Pair Program
|
The au pair program in the United Kingdom is similar to the au pair program of the United States. The basic idea of an au pair program in any nation is the same in that a young man or woman is allowed a safe place to live, a small weekly or monthly allowance, some education, and the opportunity to explore and experience a foreign country in exchange for usually a year of childcare and household chores for a host family. Usually, it is required that an au pair employed in the United Kingdom be a national of the European Union or Andorra, Faroe Islands, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Greenland, San Marino, Republic of Macedonia, Turkey, Croatia, or Monaco. However, any other nationals are still allowed to take part in the au pair scheme, but with some additional applications and visas required. To become an au pair in London, or any other are of the UK, one must be unmarried, have no dependants, and do not plan to stay within the United Kingdom for more than two years. Additionally, the potential au pair must be able to support and accommodate him or herself without the assistance of public funds. As part of most au pair programs, upon completion of the au pair period, the young man or woman must leave the United Kingdom, unless a new host family has been set up and the new arrangement complies with all Immigration Rules. There are many agencies that allow au pairs and host families to connect. Many of these agencies service large regional areas and others tend to focus more on specific nations or countries. However, each agency can be researched online and will act as the go-between for the host family and the au pair. Both the host family and au pair will be required to go through a series of interviews, application steps, screening processes, and orientation to the programs. Both parties will be required to provide personal information as well as experience. As with all other au pair programs, those in London have specific requirements for a person’s eligibility for becoming an au pair. All applicants must be single and between the ages of 18 and 27 with extensive childcare experience in the form of previous babysitting, having younger siblings, or other formal childcare experiences. Any potential au pair in the UK will also have passed a personal interview and background check as well as obtaining a medical certificate showing good mental and physical health. Additionally, any au pair must have a good understanding of the English language, completed high school, and be motivated. The au pair program is open to any young man or woman that meets these requirements and fits the profile of a well-rounded individual. For anyone interested in becoming an au pair or finding an au pair for their family, there are many resources online. It is always wise to fully research the agency before entering into an agreement. Some of the most well known agencies serving London and other UK areas are Vigi Au Pair LLC, Au Pair Professional, Au Pair at Home, and RDF Media. Au Pair | |
