Au Pair America

America's Love Affair With The Au Pair

For those who may be unaware, an Au Pair in America is a person who comes from another country, lives and is integrated into an American family, takes care of the children on a daily basis, may do some light housework, while going to school. This is a situation that is beneficial for the student as well as the family that is housing the student.

In America, an Au Pair is placed in a home with a family that is raising children. If the children are school aged, the requirements are not as strict. The Au Pair will still need to have had experience with children, but not as much experience is required as older children will be at school for a good part of each day and will not be under the responsibility of the Au Pair until the afternoon. For families with children under 2, the Au Pair is required to have at least 200 hours of experience with the care of children under 2. For an infant up to 3 months old, the mother must be home full time with the Au Pair.

In the place of daycare, an Au Pair will provide valuable services and is often taken advantage of by Americans. Though originated in Europe, many American families choose to hire an Au Pair rather than participate in daycare because of the personalized attention. At a daycare center, the "teacher" of the children is little more than a babysitter. They have several children to be responsible for and each child will want one-on-one attention, which one person is not able to do. An Au Pair provides one person to look after the person daily which means that a bond will be created between the children and the Au Pair. The Au Pair will get to know the children and perhaps even be able to help them if they are having trouble with their own schooling. This is not part of their job description, but it is something that could happen. The individual attention that an Au Pair will give is far more appreciated than the divided attention of a busy daycare provider.

There are several Au Pair agencies that are operating within the United States of America. They are: Au Pair Vista, Culture Care Au Pair, Au Pair in America, Au Pair Care, Au Pair USA, GoAuPair, EurAuPair, Agent Au Pair, Cultural Care Homestay, Au Pair Foundation, US Au pair, Au Pair International. The first six of these listed agencies have a solid history of placing Au Pairs for near twenty years. If interested, contact one of these agencies to find out more.

An Au Pair service in America is one that provides opportunity for the traveler and student as well as the family hosting. Daycare is expensive any way you look at it, but personalized daycare is priceless when you can't provide it yourself. This is an alternative that will suit all involved.
