Au Pair Canada

Canada Also Provides Tools For Au Pair Success

Becoming an Au Pair in Canada is a little different than in other countries. First of all, there is no Au Pair Canada, it is actually called Canada's Live-In Caregivers Program. These positions are only available when there are not enough Canadian caregivers to fill the need. The role of the Live-In caregiver is the same as most Au Pairs, though, since you will be providing in-home unsupervised care of children, elderly or the disabled.

There are certain requirements to being an AU Pair in Canada such as an equivalent of the Canadian high school education. Between six and twelve months of training in the same field, and six months working experience. They must also be fluent in either English or Canadian French.

The person wanting the service has to be the one to apply at a Human Resources Center Canada or HRCC. After two years within the same household or family, the AU Pair can apply for citizenship in Canada.

The only agencies that may provide the service are the Canadian Caregivers Association, the West Coast Domestic Workers' Association, the Philippine Women's Centre, Committee for Domestic Workers' and the Caregivers' Rights. Along with a few other organizations such as the Association Des aides familiales du Québec, the Canadian Coalition for In-Home Care, the Toronto Organization for Domestic Workers' Rights, the Immigrant Women of Saskatchewan, and the Calgary Immigrant Women's Association.

The history of this program in Canada is rich and filled with historical events. It was first introduced in March 1970, and was between Canada, France and Germany. Then in 1975, the original Program ended and in 1990, an Au Pair and Study Canada program was established. However, only one-year later it closed due to lack of participants. The new Live-In Caregivers Program was created and the Au Pair Canada returned.
