Au Pair Europe

European Au Pairs

If you decide to take your travels to Europe, are young, unmarried, like to care for children and have some experience, and wish to be fully immersed in at least one European culture, if not more, then becoming an Au Pair is something you may want to think about.

An Au Pair is usually a person that is over the age of eighteen, but still relatively young, interested in learning about another culture and teaching about your culture to others, taking care of children, and interested in staying in Europe for no more than two years. The Au Pair program will pair such people with families that are interested in offering room and board to those that are willing to care for their children and teach them the language of their origin.

An Au Pair will travel to the country of their choice within Europe and be placed within a host family. Your stay will usually be a year, but some programs offer shorter stays. Within the time of your stay, your job will be to teach the children in the home your language, as well as care for them while their parents are working or otherwise away.

Some programs may ask you to do some light housework, but that is often negotiable. Your host family will provide you with room and board, a weekly allowance, a room that will be your own while you're with them, and at least two days off a week in which you may choose to explore or meet up with other Au Pairs. Some family events or outings may be asked for, but that is not part of your job description. Something like that will vary by individual case. Some families will want private time and in those times it will be best to retire to your room or plan your own evening out among others or studying the culture.

The stay with your host family can last from six, nine, to twelve months. At the end of the time period, you may choose to return home, or you may decide to apply to another host family in another country or another part of the country you were already in. This will allow your experience in Europe to cover many cultures and countries within the two years that you will be allowed to stay in this capacity.

When you leave this experience, you may be well versed in one European culture or you may have a little bit of knowledge about several European countries. Whatever your choice, the experience cannot be beat. It's hard to really learn about a culture until you see it in action. The Au Pair programs make that possible by allowing you to fully immerse yourself in the culture if only for a brief time.

The Au Pair program in Europe can be exciting, educational, and end in a wealth of knowledge. You will be assisting a family with the raising of their children and in return you will be fully immersed in their culture for the duration of your stay. This is one experience that everyone should have at least once.
