Au Pair France
The French Au Pair
|
There are many opportunities for young adults and students who want to travel to France. Those who are between the ages of 18 and 30, and are willing to spend a year working to offer housekeeping and babysitting help to a local family, then consider the route of au pair France. This is traditionally seen as a role for females, though there are more and more males who are taking advantage of this situation. In an au pair set up, the student is expected to do house work that can vary from basic baby sitting, to house cleaning, to giving English lessons to their children. The specifics vary from family to family, but the general expectations will be the same. Negotiations over specific expected duties should take place before the job, and normally in France the deal will work accordingly: For around 30-35 hours of work a week (including weekends) you will be given room and board, and a small allowance that usually adds up to, on average, around the 250 Euro a month range. Au pair work is about children, and helping a family with their day to day chores and needs. If you decide to work as an au pair you will have to expect to work on the weekends and in the evenings of weekdays, and the hours may vary from day to day. You should be able to negotiate having two days off a week, especially if you are a student. In exchange, you’ll get food, housing, and can learn French while immersed in French culture. A great way to start with an au pair position search is to talk to various au pair agencies, online or from notice boards. There are many places to search for au pair positions and this can be one of the best ways to get to a foreign country and learn another language as you are immersed in culture. The au pair agencies can help make the transition easier, as well as finding employment. Specifically in France, if you are looking for au pair France work, but aren’t sure you’re the best at helping children, there is another version of au pair work, which is to help the elderly in their own homes. There are many elderly in Paris and other French cities who don’t want to go to old folks homes, but find it difficult to live alone in their own homes. In this situation, you will do mostly housework and errands, and often can find the same benefits as the more traditional au pair role, with lodging and food, and a little bit of pocket money. Either way, this is a great way to work in a foreign culture and do very rewarding work while studying and enjoying being in a different place that you may not have managed otherwise. Look at your options, and this may be the best way to enjoy the experience of a foreign nation while doing quality work. Au Pair | |
